The Chancellery of the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, is deeply saddened to note the death on November 2/15, 2025, of Count Dimitri Nikolaevich de Wouytch, a prominent figure in the Russian émigré community and the Russian Church. He was 97 years old.
Count Dimitri Nikolaevich de Wouytch was born on May 19/June 1, 1929, in the south of France into a family descended from an old Serbian noble house that had entered Russian service in 1752 under Empress Elizabeth I Petrovna. His father, Nikolai Emmanuilovich Wouytch, was a Captain in the Life Guards Uhlan Regiment of Her Majesty Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, and a veteran of World War I (1914-1918) and a participant in the Civil War (1917-1922). (For his biography, in Russian, see: https://imperialhouse.ru/rus/extra/spodvizhniki-doma-romanovykh/vuich-nikolaj-emmanuilovich-graf-nachalnik-sobstvennoj-kantselyarii-e-i-v.html). His mother was Olga Nikolaevna Wouytch (née Dobrovolskaia) (1899-1944), the daughter of the last Minister of Justice of the Russian Empire, N. A. Dobrovolsky (1854-1918). In 1962-1976, his father, N. E. Wouytch held the post of head of the Chancellery of His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Wladimir Kirillovich. In 1976, for his devoted and long years of service, N. E. Vuich was granted the title of Count by His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Wladimir Kirillovich and awarded the highest Russian chivalric order, the Imperial Order of St. Andrew the First-Called.
Dimitri Nikolaevich Wouytch’s grandfather, Emmanuel Ivanovich Wouytch (1849-1930), was an Actual State Councilor, Chamberlain, and Senator in the Russian Empire, and he served as the Director of the Department of Police. In exile, he took an active part in the development of the legitimist monarchist movement and became one of the earliest aides to Emperor-in-Exile Kirill I Vladimirovich during the period of his Curatorship of the Imperial Throne. Having emigrated from the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes to France, Emmanuel Ivanovich Wouytch met with Emperor-in-Exile Kirill I on numerous occasions. He was also a member of the Council on the Organization of Imperial Russia (the “State Council,” or Gosudarevo Soveshchanie). (See https://proza.ru/2011/02/25/666.)
Dimitri Nikolaevich de Wouytch shared the convictions of his father and grandfather, and he actively served the House of Romanoff and the ideals and values it embodied, often infusing these convictions into his work in journalism, and in the structures of the United Nations in Geneva.
After retiring in 1984, Count Dimitri Nikolaevich de Wouytch moved permanently to Australia and settled with his family in the capital city, Canberra. He was involved in publishing and educational activities, hosted a Russian program on Australian radio, and edited the periodical “Predtechensky Listok.” He was a member of the Council of Russian Compatriots in Australia, a member of the Council of Ethnic Communities of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and the General Representative of the Russian Nobility Assembly. In 2007, he participated in organizing the first visit of the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, to Australia.
For his services to the Church, the Russian nation, and the Russian Imperial House, the Grand Duchess awarded Count Dimitri Nikolaevich de Wouytch the Imperial Order of St. Anna, 1st Class (2002), the Imperial and Royal Order of the White Eagle (2009), the Imperial Order of St. Alexander Nevsky (2019), and the Imperial Order of St. Vladimir, 1st Class (2024). He was also awarded the Imperial Commemorative Medals “Anniversary of the Nation’s Triumph, 1613-2013,” “The 400th Anniversary of the House of Romanoff, 1613-2013,” and the Imperial medals “The 100th Anniversary of the Great War 1914-1918,” and “The 100th Anniversary of the Birth of the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duke Wladimir Kirillovich, 1917-2017.”
On December 27, 2010, by Decree No. 1614 of the President of the Russian Federation, Count Dimitri Nikolaevich de Wouytch was awarded the Order of Friendship. (See https://imperialhouse.ru/rus/extra/spodvizhniki-doma-romanovykh/vuich-dimitrij-nikolaevich-graf.html.)
