2023-10-10 The 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Prince Andrei Sergeevich Obolensky

October 10, 2023, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Prince Andrei Sergeevich Obolensky, the President of the Russian Nobility Association from 2002 to 2008.

Prince Andrei Sergeevich Obolensky was born in Samara into the family of the former Staff-Captain Prince Sergei Andreevich Obolensky and Princess Lydia Ivanovna Obolenskaya (née Mezhevykh).

 

In 1941, the young Prince Andrei took part in the construction of defensive fortifications in Roslavl, on the outer approaches to Moscow, to help repel the Nazi offensive.

 

In 1944 and 1945, Prince Andrei Sergeevich Obolensky studied at the Leningrad Military Engineering School. He graduated in 1948 from the Department of Oilfield Machinery of the Moscow Petroleum Institute. From 1948 to 1958, he served on the drilling team of the State Union West Siberian Oil Exploration Trust (Zapsibneftegeology), in the offices of the Ministry of Geology and the Ministry of Oil Industry, and as Chief Engineer of Supply and Procurement (MTS) in the city of Idritsa, in the Pskov region. From 1959 to 1986, he worked at the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Materials Handling and Engineering, where he held several positions in turn, including Division Head, Department Head, and Deputy Director for Research.

 

He was the author of more than 50 academic publications.

 

Prince Andrei Sergeevich Obolensky joined the Russian Nobility Association in 1995. In 2002, he was elected its President and held this position until 2008. Beginning 2005, he served as a member of the Knights’ Council of the Imperial Order of St. Anne.

 

The Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, acknowledged Prince Obolensky’s extraordinary service to the nation, awarding him the Imperial and Royal Order of St. Stanislaus, First Class (2003); the Imperial Order of St. Anna, First Class (2008); and the Imperial Order of St. Vladimir, Second Class (2013).

 

Prince Obolensky was married to Evgenia Alekseevna (née Matusevich). Their son is Lieutenant Colonel Prince Yuri Andreevich Obolensky, who holds a doctorate (Cand.) of Medical Sciences. His granddaughter is Princess Marianna Iurievna Obolenskaia.

 

Prince Andrei Sergeevich Obolensky died on February 20, 2017. He was 94 years old.
