Mikhail Alekseevich Moiseev was born on 22 January 1939 in the village of Malyi Iver, in the Svobodnyi District of the Amur Region, in a family of factory and railroad workers.
(See his Wikipedia biography here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Moiseyev; and the more detailed biography in the Russian version here: ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Моисеев_Михаил_Алексеевич.) His service to the nation began as a sailor on auxiliary ships of the Pacific Fleet, but his subsequent military service was in the army’s ground forces. After completing his military deployment in an armored battalion in the Far East Military District, he was sent to study at the Far East Tank School, from which he graduated in 1962.
In 1972, he graduated from the Frunze Military Academy, and in 1982 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR.
He served in the Joint Forces of the USSR stationed in the German Democratic Republic, and in the Carpathian, Belorussian, and Far East Military Districts. He was promoted to Major-General (in 1979), Lieutenant-General (in 1984), and Colonel-General (in 1987).
Beginning in January 1987, he commanded forces in the Far East Military District.
On 14 December 1988, he was appointed the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR and First Deputy Minister of Defense of the USSR. On 15 February 1989 he was promoted to General of the Army. He retired in 1991.
General M. A. Moiseev played an active role in veteran organizations, and remained an important figure even in retirement in discussions and the resolution of questions about the security and defense capabilities of Russia. He had enormous respect for the activities of the Imperial House of Russia and met Grand Duchess Maria of Russia on many occasions. While together with the Grand Duchess and Tsesarevich George on 2 September 2012 at the public commemoration ceremonies of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino (see: http://imperialhouse.ru/en/allnews-en/news/3205.html) he proposed that the Head of the Romanoff dynasty visit the city of Omsk, which she did from 15 to 17 May 2013 (see: http://imperialhouse.ru/en/allnews-en/news/3634.html).
The Imperial House enormously appreciates the service to the nation of General of the Army M. A. Moiseev. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, her son and heir The Tsesarevich and Grand Duke George, and his spouse Princess Victoria Romanovna, extend their deepest condolences to General Moiseev’s family, friends, and colleagues.
May the Lord remember His newly reposed servant Mikhail in His Kingdom.
