Anatolii Vasilievich Kvashnin worked his way up from deputy commander of a tank battalion to Chief of the General Staff. He was the commander of the Russian Combined Forces in the Chechen Republic (1994-1995), the commander of the North Caucasian Military District (1995-1997), and Chief of the General Staff and First Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation (1997-2004). In 2000-2010, General Kvashnin was a member of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, and in 2004-2010 he served as the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Siberian Federal District.
In 2001, while serving as the Chief of the General Staff and First Deputy Minister of Defense, General Kvashnin supported the idea of the Head of the Imperial House of Russia that the Imperial Military Order of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker be revived. He was awarded the Order at the first investiture ceremony on December 19, 2001. At the ceremony, A. V. Kvashnin, on behalf of all the recipients of the Order, presented the Grand Duchess an icon of the Order’s Heavenly Patron—St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myria in Lycia.
The Imperial House of Russia greatly appreciated the lifetime of service that General Kvashnin gave to the Russian nation. Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, her son and heir, Tsesarevich and Grand Duke George of Russia, and his spouse, Her Serene Highness Princess Victoria Romanovna, extend their deepest condolences to General Kvashnin’s family, friends, and colleagues.
May the Lord grant eternal rest to His newly reposed servant Anatolii in His Kingdom.
