The Chancellery of the Head of the Imperial House of Russia, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, is saddened to announce the death on August 2, 2021, of Abbess Mitrofania (Mikolko) (1940-2021) of the Convent of St. John the Theologian in Sura, Russia. She passed away after an extended illness.
Abbess Mitrofania was tonsured a nun in 1997 at the St. John of Rila convent in St. Petersburg, founded by St. John of Kronstadt. In 2011 she helped found a convent in the tiny village or Sura, in Arkhangelsk Region, where the great Russian saint was born. In 2021, Mitrofania was elevated to the position of abbess of the Convent of St. John the Theologian.
For her services to the Holy Church and her country, Grand Duchess Maria of Russia awarded her the commemorative medal “In Memory of the 400th Anniversary of the House of Romanoff, 1613-2013.”
Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, her son and heir Tsesarevich George of Russia, and his fiancée, Miss Victoria Romanovna Bettarini pray for the repose of the soul of Abbess Mitrofania and extend their deepest condolences to His Eminence Metropolitan Kornilii of Arkhangelsk and Kholmogorsk, the clergy and sisterhood of the St. John the Theologian Convent in Sura, and to all who loved and honoured the reposed abbess.
Grant, O Lord, eternal rest to Thy newly reposed servant, Abbess Mitrofania, and may her memory be eternal!
