The Imperial House of Russia expresses its condolences on the death of Prince Phillip

The husband of Queen Elizabeth II has died at age 99.

In an interview with the radio station Govorit Moskva,” Alexander Zakatov, the Director of the Chancellery of the Head of the Imperial House of Russia, gave his assessment of Prince Philip’s role in British politics.

“Prince Philip was a remarkable statesman, a loyal companion of Queen Elizabeth II, and a relative of the Russian Imperial House. Among his many royal ancestors are Russia’s emperors. Of course, this is a great loss, first of all, for Great Britain, for the British people, for the Royal Family. But the Russian Imperial House—its Head, Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, and her heir, Grand Duke George of Russia—also mourn the death of a relative, and express their condolences to Queen Elizabeth, the entire Royal Family and all the people of Great Britain. Truly, Prince Philip was a legend, a man who went through many trials together with his wife and his people. He made an enormous contribution to the establishment and development of good relations between our countries. Unfortunately, politicians are now not always as capable of that kind of friendship, but because of the Prince’s love for Russian culture and interest in Russian history, he, of course, understood Russia better than most of today’s politicians. He was a man with a wonderful sense of humor, who was sometimes capable of harsh words or pointed jokes, but at heart was a man who understood the greatness of Russia and the significance of the connection between Russia and Great Britain. May his memory be eternal!”

Prince Philip was just two months short of his 100th birthday. In March he underwent heart surgery. Prince Philip’s father, Prince Andrew of Greece, and Emperor Nicholas II were first cousins.

TV-Zvezda. The Personal Secretary of the Imperial Family discusses the relationship between the Romanoffs and Prince Philip

Yan Bratsky

9 April 2021

The husband of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh, died today at the age of 99. He was closely related to the Romanoff Imperial Family. The personal secretary of the Imperial Family, Alexander Zakatov, gave TV-Zvezda details about the Prince’s links to Russia.

“He was born a descendant of Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna, who was the granddaughter of Emperor Nicholas I and had married King George I of Greece. Prince Philip is descended from the line that issued from that marriage and is thus a descendant of Emperor Nicholas I,” said Zakatov.

Being a descendant of a Russian emperor, Philip agreed to allow a sample of his blood to be used for analysis when scientists were attempting to identify the remains thought to be those of the Imperial Family, which had been murdered in the Ipatiev House in Ekaterinburg.

“He provided samples of his blood for genetic analysis, but this was not enough to prove that the remains belonged to the Imperial Family. The Church and the Imperial House did not then find grounds for a positive identification of the remains. Prince Philip willingly did all he could to help resolve the matter, but even so the question of the identity of the remains has not yet been settled,” added Zakatov.

In mid-March it was announced that Prince Philip had been released from the Edward VII Hospital following successful heart surgery. At the time it was reported that he was feeling well after the procedure. He had previously been hospitalized on the advice of his doctors as a precaution.
