The Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, her son and heir, H.I.H. the Tsesarevich and Grand Duke George of Russia, and his fiancée, Victoria Romanovna Bettarini, were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Hegumen Andronik (Trubachev) (1952-2021), the Secretary of the Synodal Liturgical Commission, Associate Professor of the Moscow Theological Academy, Director of the Center for the Study, Preservation and Restoration of the Legacy of Fr. Pavel Florensky, and one of the brethren of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra.
Hegumen Andronik (Trubachev) was from a long line of Orthodox clergy. He was the grandson of the New Martyr Fr. Pavel Florensky (1882-1937), a prominent Russian historian and archivist, teacher, and renowned expert in Orthodox liturgics. Hegumen Andronik’s name will ever be associated with the revival of the Transfiguration of Christ Monastery in Valaam.
Fr. Andronik was widely known for his love for the Russian Imperial House and his faithfulness to the ideal of an Orthodox legitimate hereditary monarchy.
As abbot of the Valaam Monastery, he welcomed the Head of the House of Romanoff, Grand Duke Vladimir Kirillovich, and his spouse, Grand Duchess Leonida Georgievna, in the Monastery’s Mission in St. Petersburg during their first and only visit to their homeland in November 1991. The Grand Duke visited many of the main cathedrals in the northern capital, which retained their majestic splendor despite the decades of neglect shown them, and he said afterward that praying in the Mission Church of the Valaam Monastery, which was still in a half-ruined state, became for him the most deeply affecting moment during his visit, because it was there, in this church, which was then only beginning to be restored by the parishioners, that the Grand Duke could feel that the spiritual resurrection of Russia had truly begun.

Hegumen Andronik (Trubachev) subsequently met many times with Grand Duchess Maria and Grand Duke George, was the spiritual father of many of their countrymen who are faithful to the Imperial House, and often spoke publicly about the Orthodox Church’s teachings about monarchy and the spiritual significance of legitimism.
Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, Tsesarvich George of Russia, and Victoria Romanovna Bettarini pray for the repose of the soul of this beloved pastor and extend their condolences to his monastic brethren and spiritual children.
Grant eternal rest, O Lord, in blessed repose, to Thy newly departed servant Hegumen Andronik, and may his memory be eternal!
