I send my warmest greetings to all the organizers of and participants in the Sixth Grand Russian Ball in Rome.

I am delighted that your Ball, which has become such a regular event in the cultural life of the city of Rome and has done so much in recent years to further the development of ties between Russia and Italy, is this year dedicated to the history of our dynasty.

The Ball this year takes place on the last day of 2017, according to the calendar that was in force in the Russian Empire and which remains the ecclesiastical calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church. On the day after the Ball, according to that same calendar, the New Year—2018—begins, when we will mark the 100^th anniversary of many tragic events in the history of Russia, and the beginning of mass repressions, including the murders of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearer Emperor Nicholas II and his family, many other members of our House, and those who served them so loyally.

We must never allow ourselves to forget these events. Even so, the memory of this suffering must never lead us to despair, but rather should elevate our spirit and give us confidence in the eventual victory of Good over Evil. In reviving our wonderful traditions and in finding ways to use them to build understanding between nations and advance the cause of philanthropy, we readily see the enormous importance and relevance of the rich and diverse heritage which our ancestors bequeathed to us.

I wish you all good health, happiness, a wonderful evening together, and success in all your endeavours, in your cultural and educational work, and in all your philanthropic efforts.

My son and heir, Grand Duke George of Russia, joins me in sending you all our warm greetings and best wishes on this occasion.

Agli Organizzatori e partecipanti del gran ballo russo a Roma.

Saluto gli organizzatori e partecipanti alla sesta edizione del gran ballo Russo a Roma.

É con enorme piacere che saluto la vostra associazione che promuove le relazioni culturali tra Russia ed Italia e che é divenuta un appuntamento culturale fisso nell’agenda capitolina.

Quest’anno le celebrazioni sono dedicate alla soria della nostra dinastia. Il gala si svolge l’ultimo giorno dell’anno 2017 secondo il calendario che era in vigore durante l’Impero russo, e che tuttavia continua ad essere adottato dalla Chiesa Ortodossa di Russia.

In virtù di tale calanedario domani é l’inizio del nuovo anno 2018, che segna 100 anni dallo svolgimento di diversi tragici eventi che hanno segnato la storia russa: tra questi l’inizio di repressioni di massa, l’esecuzione del Santo imperatore Nicola II, la sua famiglia e molteplici membri della nostra Casa imperiale e dei loro fedeli servitori.

Non abbiamo il diritto di dimenticare. Ma la memoria dei martiri non deve paralizzarci nello sconforto; al contrario deve servire a sollevare i nostri spiriti ed aumentare la fiducia che riponiamo nel trionfo del bene sul male. Attraverso il far rivivere la belle tradizioni e il loro uso per la cooperazione tra i popoli e le azioni di misericordia, dimostriamo al mondo moderno l’importanza della ricca e multiforme eredità di grandezza che ci deriva dei nostri antenati.

Auguro a tutti Voi salute e felicità, gioia nelle relazioni, successo nel vostro lavoro, e nelle attività culturali e caritatevoli che promuovete
