“White Flower” Charity Event at the Andrei Rublev Museum, September 21, 2013

“White Flower” Charity Event at the Andrei Rublev Museum, September 21, 2013

The Andrei Rublev Central Museum of Ancient Russian Culture at the Andronikov Monastery, the Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy, and the Synodal Office for Charities and Social Services of the Russian Orthodox Church, announce the Charity Event “White Flower,” which will take place on September 21, 2013—on the Feast Day of the Nativity of the Most Pure Mother of God. The event will take place at 2:00 PM.

The Feast of the Nativity of the Most Pure Mother of God is commemorated and significant not only for the entire Orthodox world, but is also important for the Andrei Rublev Central Museum of Ancient Russian Culture. It was precisely on September 21, 1960, that the Museum opened its doors for its first visitors. 1960 was the “Year of Andrei Rublev”—the 600th anniversary of his birth. This year, the Museum—along with the Andrei Rublev Foundation, the Martha and Mary Convent, and the Synodal Office for Charities and Social Services of the Russian Orthodox Church—are holding the charity event “White Flower,” which is dedicated to the revival of the traditions of charity and philanthropy of pre-Revolutionary Russia.

The tradition of celebrating the “White Flower” began in the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century, under the sponsorship of the Imperial family. The Holy Passion-Bearers Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, the Heir Tsesarevich and Grand Duke Aleksei Nikolaevich, Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia, as well as other members of the Russian Imperial House, personally participated in the many activities associated with this event.

Today, the “White Flower” event is many things—a charity event, an exhibit and sale of various artworks by Moscow school children. A wide variety of creative works by children will be put on display. Those who purchase one of the unique works by these children will also receive a “living” white flower. The flower may be a white lily or a yellow-eyed daisy with white pedals—but one will have to come to the charity event to find out.

Proceeds from all the sales will go to support the St. Elizabeth Children’s School for Girls.

School children wishing to take part in this charity event are requested to notify us by September 15 (please also indicate what work of art you will be offering for exhibit and sale).

Come and bring your artwork on the Feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God!

Program:

The formal opening of the charity event will take place in the Concert Hall of the Museum (in the hall of the Church of St. Aleksei, Metropolitan of Moscow, of the Cathedral of the Holy Archangel Michael).

Welcoming addresses will be given by His Grace, Bishop Panteleimon of Orekhovo-Zuevo, chairman of the Synodal Office for Charities and Social Services of the Russian Orthodox Church;

and by G. V. Popova, the Director of the Andrei Rublev Museum and President of the Andrei Rublev Foundation.

There will also be a tour of the exhibit “Icons of the Nativity of the Most Pure Mother of God in the Collections of the Andrei Rublev Museum” (a fundraiser for the benefit of the children in the St. Elizabeth’s School).

Lunch for the children of St. Elizabeth’s School will take place in the refectory “House of Bread.”

The suggested donation for admission to the exhibit is 250 rubles for adults, 175 rubles for children, students, and senior citizens.
