HIH sends greetings of Forum for school librarians

Greetings
from the Head of the Imperial House of Russia,
H.I.H. the Grand Duchess Maria of Russia
to the Organizers and Participants
of the 10th All-Russian Forum of School Librarians
“Mikhailovskoe 2017”

I am pleased to send my warmest greetings to the organizers and participants of the 10th All-Russian Forum of School Librarians, “Mikhailovskoe 1017.”

The role played by school librarians is of paramount importance to the moral, spiritual, and public education of young people today. As we improve and modernize our libraries, we must also maintain a sensible balance between the adoption and use of rapidly-developing information technologies and the aesthetic pleasures that come from reading. The introduction of electronic books and other resources, of course, is useful and necessary, but should not diminish our love for books in the centuries-old form they have taken, nor disrupt the person-to-person contacts that have long linked librarians and readers. Modernization brings with it real and tangible benefits, provided it is not based on the weakening or destruction of our historical heritage, but instead coexists with that heritage in a way that is mutually-enriching and harmonious.

I hope very much that the Forum is productive and achieves many good things for our country.

My son and heir, Grand Duke George of Russia, also sends his greetings.

God bless you!
