Memorial Service (panikhida) for the Head of the Georgian Royal House

On 20 January 2009 in Madrid, the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, attended a memorial service for her cousin, the Head of the Georgian Royal Family, H.R.H. Prince Georgii Iraklievich Bagration-Mukhranskii, who reposed in the Lord on 16 January 2008. The service took place in the Orthodox Cathedral of Ss. Andrei and Dimitrii (this cathedral was erected by the labours of the first Orthodox parish in Madrid, which was established by the Head of the Georgian Royal Family, H.R.H. Prince Georgii Aleksandrovich Bagration-Mukhranskii, the most august grandfather of the Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna and of Prince Georgii Iraklievich. During the time he lived in Madrid, Prince Georgii Iraklievich attended this church.)

After the Divine Liturgy, during which the newly departed Prince Georgii Iraklievich was commemorated, before the kissing of the cross, Bishop Polikarp served a Litiya. Then Fr. Konstantine, with the blessing of the Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, separately served a memorial service (panikhida) in full.

At this same time in Georgia, the remains of the newly departed prince were transferred from Tbilisi to Mtskheta and buried in the family vault of Kings of Georgia. Accompanying the remains to its final resting place was His Holiness and Beatitude, the Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, members of the Bagration royal family and their relatives, government officials, and countless average citizens.
