2022-10-01 The First Wedding Anniversary of the Tsesarevich George of Russia and Her Serene Highness Princess Victoria Romanovna

October 1, 2022 marks one year since the wedding of H.I.H. The Heir, Tsesarevich, and Grand Duke George of Russia and H.S.H. Princess Victoria Romanovna.

The wedding took place with the consent and blessing of the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, with the strict observance of the provisions of the current dynastic laws. The betrothal ceremony took place in the cradle of the Romanoff Dynasty: the Holy Trinity Ipatievsky Monastery in Kostroma on January 24, 2021, officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Ferapont of Kostroma and Nerekhta (http://imperialhouse.ru/.../2021-01-24-v-kostromskom...).

State registration of marriage took place on September 24, 2021, in the Khamovniki District Marriage Registry Office in Moscow.

With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia, with whom the bride and groom had met at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra on September 12, 2021, at the celebrations of the 800th anniversary of the birth of St. Alexander Nevsky, the wedding ceremony took place in St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg and was officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Barsanophius of St. Petersburg and Ladoga, with other clergy. During preparations for the wedding celebrations, members of the Imperial House and their staff received moral support and other assistance, in strict accordance with the Constitution of the Russian Federation and its current legislation, from the Office of the President of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, and the Western Military District.

Thanks to the coordination with state institutions of the Russian Federation, the Hierarchy and clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church, institutions under the Russian Imperial House, and public organizations and civic groups, the wedding of H.I.H. The Grand Duke George and H.S.H. Princess Victoria Romanovna took place in a dignified manner, without undue pomp, but in observance of all the most important traditions, while taking into account also the realities of the present circumstances. The wedding was attended by Heads and members of many foreign Imperial and Royal Houses, hierarchs and clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church, and figures in science and culture from across Russia and abroad.

That this wedding of a member of the House of Romanoff on Russian soil, the first in a century, took place at all, and the manner in which it was performed—the first fully-realized, public, socially significant and legal (in the sense that it was performed in full accordance with modern laws of the Russian Federation and, at the same time, with Russia’s historical dynastic laws) offer clear and convincing proof that Article 67.1 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation does not contain mere hollow words when it proclaims that “The Russian Federation, united by a thousand-year history, and preserving the memory of its ancestors who passed down to us ideals and faith in God, as well as the continuity in the development of the Russian state, recognizes its historically formed state unity.”
