2022-04-10 MEMORY ETERNAL! Alexander Ivanovich Shkurko (1937-2022), President of the State Historical Museum (GIM)

The Chancellery of the Head of the Russian Imperial, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, is deeply saddened to announce the death on April 10, 2022, of Alexander Ivanovich Shkurko, President of the State Historical Museum (GIM) and a knight of the Imperial Order of St. Anna.

Alexander Ivanovich Shkurko was born in Kharkov on November 4, 1937. In 1960 he graduated from the History Department of Moscow State University, and in 1964 he took a position at the State Historical Museum (from 1976 to 1992, he served as Assistant Director of the Museum). He was a world-renowned expert on Scythian archeology. From 1981 to 1992, he was the First Deputy Minister of Culture of the RSFSR; and from 1991 to 1992, acting Minister. In 1992 he was appointed the Director of the State Historical Museum, and in 2010 he was appointed President of GIM.

 

The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, her son and heir, the Tsesarevich and Grand Duke George of Russia, and his spouse Princess Victoria Romanovna extend their deepest condolences to Alexander Ivanovich’s family, friends, and colleagues.

 

May the Lord grant rest to the soul of the newly reposed servant of God Alexander in His Kingdom.
