2021-11-29 Memory Eternal. Andrei Andreevich Romanoff (1923-2021)

The Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, was deeply saddened to receive the news of the passing of her relative Andrei Andreevich Romanoff, the oldest descendant of the Romanoff dynasty and the son of H.H. Prince of the Imperial Blood Andrei Alexandrovich and his first wife, Elisabetta Fabritsievna di Sasso Ruffo.

Andrei Andreevich Romanoff was born in London. During World War II, he served on the British light cruiser Sheffield, which, among other deployments, escorted convoys to Murmansk. He also participated in the Battle of the Atlantic, the allied invasions of North Africa, and then was sent to serve in the Pacific Theatre, where he was when the war ended.

In 1949, Andrei Andreevich left Great Britain and moved to the United States, where his uncle, H.H. Prince of the Imperial Blood Vasilii Alexandrovich, helped him find employment in his new home. He became a US citizen in 1954. After retiring, he pursued his interest in art, producing drawings in the primitivist style and becoming an accomplished photographer. He visited Russia several times.

He was married three times and has three sons from his first two marriages.

He passed away on 15/28 November 2021 in Inverness, California.

H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, her son and heir, H.I.H. Grand Duke George of Russia, and his spouse, Her Serene Highness Princess Victoria Romanovna, extend their deepest condolences to Andrei Andreevich Romanoff’s family and friends, and ask all their countrymen to pray for the repose of his soul.
